Relaying on a new support
Once clay had been removed from the rear, the fragments were prepared for application on a new support. The mortar residues were removed using vibroincisors, or leveled so as to create a regular surface on which to place fresh bedding mortar. The mounting of each floor was preceded by a planning phase, in which the new support was prepared by drawing the single fragments on a panel of the same size as the mosaic. The smaller panels were then cut from it, following the assemblage plan.
The mosaics were positioned on the new support face up, by applying the fragments directly on the panel, previously covered in fresh mortar. The method consists in gradually mounting the fragments, generally two or three a day, until the entire floor is complete. During assembly, small lacunae and missing tesserae along the cuts were integrated, in order to improve the presentation of the surfaces.
