Roberto Nardi was nominated Samuel H. Kress Lecturer in Ancient Art for the 2010/2011 academic year by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA). The AIA promotes archaeological inquiry and public understanding of the material record of the human past, and supports archaeologists, their research and its dissemination. The motivations for the prestigious award were stated in the nomination letter of May 8th, 2009:
Dear Dr. Nardi,
It is my pleasure to inform you that you have been selected as the Samuel H. Kress Lecturer in Ancient Art for the 2010/2011 academic year. The Lecture Program Committee of the AIA selected you from several hundred nominees for the Archaeological Institute of America National Lecture Program and – in short – we think this is quite an honor.
The Kress Lectureship is administered by the Archaeological Institute of America, and has been since 1984, underwritten by a series of grants from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation in New York. The lectureship was established to enable the Institute to invite two distinguished foreign scholars to lecture to members of the AIA and university communities.
This program is a vital part of the AIA’s mission, for it brings important developments in the field of archaeology to the general public through a series of lectures given by scholars like yourself to each of the Institute’s 104 societies throughout the United States and Canada. These lectures are often the highlight of a society’s season, and are not only a wonderful way to bring new members to the AIA, but also an opportunity for lecturers to share the results of their research, meet colleagues and friends, and fulfill their commitment to public education. As Kress Lecturer, you are asked to address 12 to13 AIA societies as selected by the Lecture Program Coordinator.
Sincerely,
C. Brian Rose
