The 2019 intervention
The exposure to the marine environment, the location within a garden rich in shrub vegetation, the repeated interventions undergone in conjunction with the fragility of the original constituent materials, are the causes that have continued to worsening the state of conservation of the surfaces and of the innermost layers, leading to a rapid loss of the tessellatum. This process of rapid decay was particularly accentuated and severe on the mosaic at the foot of the tower.
Thanks to the attention and commitment of the villa owner a new intervention was carried out in 2019 on this mosaic by the Centro di Conservazione Archeologica. The aims of the intervention were restoring structural consistency to the mosaic plan and to the preparation layers, to create the conditions for the long-term conservation of all surfaces through the implementation of seasonal backfilling and an annual maintenance plan.
Soluble salts were extracted, deep and superficial consolidations were carried out with lime-based mortars, the lacunae were integrated both with new tesserae and fillings with mortar.
At the end of the intervention, the exposed mosaics were covered with a Goretex Delta-Vent sheet and with a layer of 5 cm of expanded clay enclosed in pre-packaged Geo-textile cushions.
