The Mosaic Conservation Course – Jordan and Tunisia 2012-2013 is a collaboration between CCA, the Department of Antiquities of Jordan (DoA) and the Institut National du Patrimoine (INP) of Tunisia. It is part of MOSAIKON, an international initiative which aims to build capacity for the conservation and management of mosaics in the Mediterranean region.
The aim of MCC Jordan and Tunisia was to provide participants with a good understanding of how to develop and implement a conservation plan for lifted mosaics and opus sectile pavements. It was attended by three members of the Jordan Department of Antiquities (DoA), and three members of Tunisia’s Institut National du Patrimoine (INP). The course was structured in one seven week module and one five week module. Both combined theoretical lectures with intensive laboratory practice and took place in Italy, at CCA’s headquarters in Belmonte in Sabina, Rieti.
Theoretical lectures, delivered by CCA members and several international experts, dealt with a range of topics including modern principles of mosaics conservation, main intervention techniques, elements of chemistry and ancient manufacturing techniques. Laboratory practice focussed on the treatment of a Roman mosaic from the Villa del Quadraro, Rome, dating to the 3rd century A.D., and of an opus sectile pavement from the Roman Villa of Sant’Imbenia in Sardinia. As part of the laboratory activities, participants learned various ways of producing materials needed for treatments, such as glues, mortars and supports. They also produced a detailed written and photographic documentation for both mosaics. At weekends, trainees had the chance to visit sites and museums with mosaics.
MOSAIKON is a partnership of four institutions: the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) and the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics (ICCM).
