Restoration and conservation of a Roman painted ceiling from the villa of Sant’ Imbenia, Alghero, Sardinia

University of Cyprus, Nicosia / November 5th, 2013

About this lecture

On the 4th – 6th of November 2013 the international meeting “Cultural Heritage Practices: Issues of Archaeological Conservation and Site Preservation” organised by the New Archaeological Research Network for Integrating Approaches to Ancient Material Studies (NARNIA) took place.

During this event Andreina Costanzi Cobau presented the project for the conservation and restoration of wall paintings from Saint’Imbenia Roman Villa, Alghero, Sardinia. A great number of painted plaster fragments were retrieved during archaeological excavations of the villa, carried out by the Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici per le Province di Sassari e Nuoro between 1999 and 2005. The fragments, dated to 2nd – 3rd century A.D., were part of the ceiling decoration in one of the villa’s rooms.

Following a long process of research and documentation, CCA conservators assembled the fragments. They managed to compose two small domes, decorated with velaria and floreal designs and one panel in the shape of a rhombus depicting an amorino. Andreina Costanzi Cobau presented the conservation process of the plaster fragments, as well as the project for their final disply in the Alghero Museum.
