About this lecture
The theme of the VIIth International Conference of the ICCM held at Saint-Romain-en-Gal and Arles was “Mosaics. Conserve to Display?” and, apart from the strong emphasis on in situ conservation, the conference also paid attention to the cases where such conservation is impossible.
In this frame Roberto Nardi described to the audience the maintenance program carried out by the Centro di Conservazione Archeologica of Rome at Ostia Antica, Piazzale delle Corporazioni on 1000 square metres of mosaic ‑ some in situ, others detached and laid on a cement base during the 60s. The techniques, time and costs of the treatment, the conception of informing the public as the work progresses and the planned measures for protection and future maintenance were presented.
