The Crypta Balbi complex includes a medieval tower that is part of Palazzo Pier Mattei Albertoni. The building is richly decorated with two painted coffered ceilings. By reading the heraldic shields, we were able to reconstruct the family’s history.
The ceilings were in serious condition. They were documented, classified, detached and moved to the CCA laboratory to be restored. They were later put back in their original position.
Today they represent one of the major examples of medieval painting in Rome.
